Think Like A White Man – Nels Abbey

“Remember, that at the end of the day there is nothing wrong with you. You are trying to navigate a social order and stigma that predated you and will continue after you. In a normal and just world, you wouldn’t have to go through any of this shit.”

This is the funniest book that I’ve ever read! When I read up the book ‘Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race’, the author spoke about how her graphic designer recommended that she use a catchy title with big letters to get the people’s attention. I feel that Nels Abbey certainly got that memo.

As soon as I saw the title and the rave reviews which were written about it before it was released, it made its way to the top of my ‘to buy list. The book expertly tells the story of how one must ‘code switch’ in order to navigate your way through the corporate world.

It talks about the different people you encounter in the office, while dissecting the various ‘types’ of black people in the office also. As it is a satirical book, don’t take it too seriously, but I like the way he explains real-life everyday situations and people in his unique style.

I definitely recommend this for all to read, my favourite book of last year!
